Q) In the dynamic landscape of Paris, how has the city itself shaped the bold and sometimes provocative themes in your photography?

A) In the dynamic landscape of Paris, my personal preference leans towards the vast expanses of nature, such as the beach and the countryside, over the urban setting. However, Paris has played a crucial role in my artistic and personal emancipation, providing an open, smart, and safe space to explore my photography.

Photographically, though, Paris can sometimes occupy too romantic a space in relation to the captured subject. The city itself becomes a distinct subject, challenging to dissociate from the photographed object. My approach aims to rediscover the essence of intimacy and documentary, whether on a beach in nature or in the privacy of a room

Looking forward, I aspire to broaden my artistic horizons by exploring other metropolises, including New-York City. So, for any like-minded readers, I would be delighted to meet them soon.

Q) Within our current exclusive, you’ve presented a daring and tasteful interpretation of beauty, capturing Thymeo in a stripped-back setting that transitions from the intimacy of his bedroom to the vulnerability of the shower. What inspired this intimate and edgy approach to the shoot?

A) I meticulously prepare each shot by adopting a documentary approach, as if I were photographing a friend in an apparently mundane moment that unveils their true beauty. This approach is fueled by my friendships, loves, and memories, aiming to immortalize gestures and moments that have left a mark on me – those I’ve sometimes eagerly awaited or even fantasized about.

On a technical note, I ensure to maintain a balanced distance from my subject. Being too far away might create emotional detachment, while excessive closeness could induce stress. When working in natural settings, I also opt for lightweight equipment to preserve the spontaneity of the session and allow greater flexibility in response to changing light conditions. This approach recognizes that time is a precious and energy-consuming resource.

In summary, my photographic approach is grounded in the authenticity of human relationships, drawing inspiration from moments that have shaped my personal experiences. Through this lens, I aim to capture the revealing beauty of intimacy and authenticity.

Q) Photography often blurs the lines between reality and artifice. Can you discuss a moment where this intersection profoundly impacted your perspective on a project?

A) Photography indeed frequently operates at the delicate intersection between reality and artifice. A moment that profoundly influenced my perspective on this interplay occurred during a session where the artificial aspect was intricately woven with imagination. The staging, lighting, and setting were carefully planned to create a specific atmosphere. However, the element of reality remained unpredictable. The spontaneity of the moment, the emotions at the precise instant of capturing the image, added an unexpected and authentic dimension.

This experience left a lasting impression, underscoring that the artificial part in photography often stems from preconceived imagination, while reality brings its share of unpredictability, spontaneity, and genuine emotions. Both facets constantly influence each other, creating a dynamic where planned creativity interacts with the essence of the captured moment. It adds excitement and eagerness to always anticipate what will unfold, akin to watching a film unravel before our eyes: The photographer is thus both a director and a spectator.

Q) Reflecting on the broader spectrum of your work, especially as society becomes increasingly receptive to the natural male form, moving away from taboo and embracing openness despite social media censorship, how do you navigate the fine line between pushing boundaries to spark conversation and maintaining a respectful dialogue with your audience? Are you concerned about potentially unsettling some viewers, or do you see it as an essential part of initiating important conversations?

A) Reflecting on the evolution of my work in the current context, where society appears increasingly receptive to the natural representation of the male body, is a thought-provoking journey. The gradual shift in taboos and the growing embrace of openness despite social media censorship present unique challenges and opportunities.

Navigating the delicate balance between pushing boundaries to spark conversation and maintaining a respectful dialogue with my audience is of paramount importance. I strive to find a delicate equilibrium, aware of the changing norms of society and the diverse sensitivities of my audience. The goal is to initiate important discussions about the perception of the male body while respecting individual boundaries.

It’s worth noting that, during the photographic process, I don’t necessarily consider social media regulations. However, I am mindful of these regulations when it comes to publishing. This dynamic becomes particularly interesting when the audience expresses a desire to see more uncensored images, leading to discussions and exchanges.

It is inevitable to realize that my own artistic representation may not resonate with everyone. However, the concept of beauty and its pursuit are universal, transcending individual differences. Furthermore, it is essential to emphasize that the representation of the male nude has existed since time immemorial, adding a cultural depth to my work.

Certainly, society may seem receptive, even progressive, but it is crucial to recognize that nothing is guaranteed. Perceptions are evolving, but the path toward complete, universal acceptance and nuanced understanding remains an ongoing process.

Q) Each project brings its own set of challenges and learnings. Could you share a pivotal obstacle you’ve encountered in your career and the wisdom gained from overcoming it?

A) The decision to explore artistic nudity posed a significant challenge for me. My very first nude model, Erwan Jeammot, now a friend, was a dancer. This experience was crucial in pushing my own boundaries as a photographer. Although it may seem paradoxical, it was Erwan who, right from the start, established a serene atmosphere during our sessions, thereby creating mutual trust. I firmly believe that the relationship between a photographer and their model is balanced; each party contributes, and the photograph takes shape through this collaboration.

Empowered by this acquired trust, I am capable of conveying emotion to other models, sometimes new to the art of nudity. Establishing a safe space, a friendly territory, remains a constant challenge, as each individual experiences their emotions and relationship with the body uniquely. This approach aims to forge an authentic connection, fostering an artistic exchange that transcends mere visual capture. Thus, the initial challenge of photographing nudity has evolved into an ongoing exploration, where each session presents a new opportunity to build respectful and creative bonds with my models.

Q) Delving into the dynamics of your photo shoots, particularly those that navigate sensitive themes, how do you foster an environment of trust and creativity with your models? Further, have you noticed a shift in how men, within society, are becoming more comfortable with presenting their bodies nude compared to previous years? Do you see this as a sign of changing attitudes towards masculinity and vulnerability?

A) To establish an environment of trust and creativity during my photo sessions, especially those exploring sensitive themes, the key lies in open communication and mutual respect. Before each session, and through mood boards, I strive through images and text to show models how I envision my images. These preliminary discussions are essential to talk about their boundaries, preferences, and to ensure a clear understanding of the artistic goals.

Regarding the evolution of the perception of the male nude body in society, the emergence of platforms like OnlyFans has certainly played a role in redefining norms and attitudes. These platforms give individuals the opportunity to take ownership of their image and share their bodies in a way that may be perceived as more liberated and less stigmatized. To me, this could be interpreted as a reflection of progressive changes in the perception of masculinity and vulnerability, with an increasing acceptance of body diversity and individual expressions.

However, it’s important to note that everyone reacts differently to these developments, and acceptance of male nudity can vary significantly from person to person. Approaching these issues with sensitivity and respect, I strive to create images that celebrate diversity while navigating a constantly evolving cultural landscape.

Q) Beyond the lens, how do your personal experiences and journeys influence the stories you choose to tell through your photography?

A) Every encounter, every lived moment, contributes to my understanding of the human experience, fostering a deeper connection with the people I photograph.

On a personal level, being gay has played a significant role in shaping my artistic approach, providing a unique perspective on intimacy and identity, adding a particular dimension to my photographs.

During my travels, I particularly enjoy observing groups of boys and their interactions. I aspire to capture these authentic moments that reflect the diversity of human experiences. However, I am currently too shy to seize these real moments. Nevertheless, this frustration from missed photographs influences how I frame my subjects and interpret their relationships.

Q) Artistic creation is often accompanied by moments of levity and unexpected turns. Could you recount a particularly memorable or humorous incident from behind the scenes?

A) My mood during shooting is characterized by a very outgoing temperament. I enjoy creating a light and joyful atmosphere, aiming to capture spontaneous smiles and laughter as much as possible.

In fact, I prefer to let the models I’ve photographed speak for themselves. I am curious to know what their memorable or humorous incidents behind the scenes might have been. Each person brings their own energy and experiences to the photoshoot, and hearing their perspectives on those moments can be as fun and enriching as the shoot itself. Sorry to disappoint you all…ahah !

Q) As we look ahead, are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that excite you, something that marks a new direction or evolution in your artistic journey?

A) I am particularly excited about allowing myself to be surprised by the future, to see where each image will take me in my artistic journey. There is a certain thrill in exploring new horizons and evolving with each project.

Additionally, I intend to embark on a series of self-portraits in the near future. This will allow me to explore more personally and introspectively, adding a new and authentic dimension to my work. It’s an exciting step in my journey, and I look forward to seeing how it will influence and broaden my creative vision.
